PARISH NOTES – NOVEMBER 2019
FERNS DIOCESAN ECUMENICAL SOCIETY:
The Autumn Quiet Day took place on Tuesday 15th October, 2019 in Ballyvaloo Retreat Centre, Blackwater from 11.15a.m. to 4.00p.m. Revd Des Bain, former President of the Methodist Church led our Quiet Day in two addresses this year. The Revd Bain has worked extensively in Ecumenical Relations between the Christian Churches.
Autumn Lecture: This year’s Autumn Lecture will take place on Thursday 21st November, 2019 in The Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy at 7.30p.m. The guest speaker will be Mr. David Turner, Director of Church in Chains. Church in Chains is an independent Irish Charity that encourages prayer and action in support of persecuted Christians worldwide, with special focus on China, Egypt, Eritrea, India, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, North Korea, Pakistan, Syria, Turkey and Uzbekistan.
WEXFORD FESTIVAL OPERA THANKSGIVING EUCHARIST:
Wexford Festival Opera Thanksgiving Eucharist took place in St. Iberius’ Church on Sunday 20th October, 2019 at 11.15a.m. We extend our appreciation to the guest choir, Wexford Festival Singers who led the music of the service this year, accompanied by Mr. Simon Harden, organist, Dr. Kevin O’Carroll, Musical Director and Mr. Anthony Nolan on trumpet. The readings were read by Deputy Brendan Howlin, Leader of the Labour Party and Dr. David Agler, Artistic Director, Wexford Festival Opera and Fr. Aodhán Marken, ADM, Wexford Parish. This was a United Service of our Union of Parishes. The Celebrant and Guest Preacher was the Right Revd Bishop Michael Burrows, Bishop of Cashel, Ferns and Ossory. `There were ten Lunchtime Recitals in St. Iberius’ Church during the Opera Festival in aid of the Opera, which started on Wednesday 23rd October at 1.05p.m. There was a most impressive attendance at these concerts again this year.
The fringe event Art Exhibition in St. Iberius’ Church this year displayed the work of the internationally acclaimed expressionist painter, Michael Mulcahy. The exhibition brought an influx of expressionist devotees among many others who came to see the exhibition.
KILSCORAN PARISH, BISHOP’S VISIT:
Bishop Michael presided at a celebration of Holy Communion in St. Peter’s Church, Kilscoran on Sunday 20th October, 2019 at 9.30a.m.
The 2019 Diocesan Synod took place on Wednesday 23rd October in the Woodford Dolmen Hotel, Carlow. Thank you to our dutiful Synodspersons who attended from the Parish.
BALLOUGHTON YOUTH CLUB:
Balloughton Family Service: The next family service in St. Paul’s Church, Balloughton will take place on Sunday 17th November, 2019 at 9.30a.m.
Christmas Party: A Christmas Party will take place in Balloughton Hall on Saturday 14th December, 2019 at 4.00p.m. Further details will appear in next month’s issue. Please keep the date free.
R.N.L.I (LIFEBOAT) COFFEE MORNING:
The R.N.L.I. Coffee morning will be held in the Riverbank Hotel on Friday 1st November, 2019 from 10.30a.m. to 12.30p.m. Christmas Cards, Calendars and gifts available. All welcome. The R.N.L.I. Shop (beside Wexford Bridge) will be open every Saturday from
2.00p.m. to 5.00p.m.
WEXFORD FESTIVAL SINGERS:
Wexford Festival Singers are delighted to present "The Creation" by Joseph Haydn featuring Soprano Ava Dodd, Tenor Andrew Gavin and Baritone David Corr. Joining them will be Waterford Concert Orchestra and Conductor Dr. Kevin O'Carroll. The concert will be held
in Rowe Street Church on Sunday 3rd November, 2019 at 3.00p.m. Tickets from Wexford Arts Centre Box office, online at wexfordartscentre.ie and on the door - €20.00.
WEXFORD GOLF CLUB ECUMENICAL REMEMBRANCE SERVICE:
This service will take place in Wexford Golf Club at 7.30p.m. on Friday 8th November, 2019. All are welcome.
CHURCH OF IRELAND CHILDRENS’ MINISTRY:
A Children’s’ Ministry “Building Blocks” Conference will take place on Saturday 9th November, 2019. The key note speaker will be the ever popular Martyn Payne. We are awaiting further details from The Diocesan Children’s’ Office
The service this year will take place on Sunday 10th November, 2019 in St. Iberius’ Church, Wexford at 10.30a.m. This will be a United Service for The Union of Parishes. The Loch Garman Band under the baton of Mr. John Clancy, (with Mr. Anthony Nolan, Solo Trumpet) will provide the music to accompany the hymns and will also play “Nimrod” from Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations, “Benedictus” by Karl Jenkins, “The Last Post” and “The Reveille”. We will also be joined by Reverend Fr. Aodhán Marken, ADM, Wexford. This service will be broadcast live on South East Radio. Please note change in time.
REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY – KILLURIN CHURCH
There will be a Remembrance Sunday Service in Killurin Church on Sunday 10th November, 2019 at 7.30p.m. The organist for the Service will be Mrs. Anna Skrine Brunton who will be accompanied by Mr. Anthony Nolan on trumpet. Anthony will also sound “The Last Post” and “The Reveille” on trumpet during the Act of Remembrance.
A meeting took place on Tuesday 15th October, 2019 at The Rectory, Park, at 7.30p.m. A talk was given my Mr. Robbie Syme on the current project he is involved with in Africa.
The next meeting of Mothers’ Union will take place in The Rectory, Park on Tuesday 12th November, 2019 at 7.30p.m.
M.U. Shoe Box Appeal: The plan for The Mothers’ Union meeting on Tuesday 10th December, 2019 will be the putting together of shoe boxes to the benefit of a local charity. This matter will be discussed by members at the November meeting.
BIBLE STUDY EVENINGS:
Our Bible Study continues on all other Monday evenings in November at 7.30p.m. at The Rectory, Park, Wexford. It was good to see a few new faces over the past months. All interested are welcome to attend at any time.
WEXFORD YOUTH CLUB:
A meeting will take place at The Rectory, Park, Wexford at 8.00p.m. on Thursday 14th November, 2019 for all who are interested in re-establishing a Youth Club in the Wexford end of the parish. Would all those who are interested in attending please contact the Rector.
WEXFORD GENERAL HOSPITAL ECUMENICAL REMEMBRANCE SERVICE:
This service will take place in Clonard Church at 7.30p.m. on Friday 15th November, 2019. We particularly remember those who have died within the past year and their families and friends. Some will also remember an anniversary from years past. All are welcome.
WEXFORD WANDERERS RUGBY CLUB ANNUAL SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE:
Our annual Service of Remembrance will take place at Wexford Wanderers Rugby Club on Friday 15th November, 2019 at 8p.m. All are welcome.
WEXFORD LIONS CLUB: FORGOTTEN REFUGEE CHILDREN PROJECT, LEBANON:
Wexford Lions Club will host a concert on Saturday 16th November, 2019 in St. Iberius’ Church at 7.30p.m. The Wexford Male Voice Choir will be joined by a guest choir from Castlecomer for this concert. The support of all would be greatly appreciated.
BALLOUGHTON PARISH SALE:
Balloughton Parish sale will take place in Balloughton Parish Hall on Saturday 7th December, 2019 at 2.00p.m to 4.30p.m. Home baking, preserves, plants, books, bric-a-brac etc. will be on sale. Parishioners greatly appreciate the support from neighbouring parishes and the community. Please bring friends.
MULRANKIN CAROL SERVICE:
Will take place in St. David’s Church, Mulrankin on Friday 13th December, 2019 at 7.30p.m.
There will an art exhibition by Mrs. Mollie O’Reilly in The Rectory, Killinick on Sunday 15th December, 2019 from 2-5p.m. entitled “Art and Soul”. All welcome
KILSCORAN COFFEE MORNING AND SALE:
Will take place in Cushen’s Pub, Tagoat on Tuesday 17th December, 2019 at 11.00a.m. All
are invited to attend. Home baking and quality goods are much appreciated towards the
sale and raffle. All proceeds towards Kilscoran Parish funds. Please contact Mrs. Betty Reid.
VOLUNTARISM IN CHURCH LIFE:
We encourage as much support as possible from parishioners in assisting with a wide array
of work in all our Churches. We would warmly welcome articles of appreciation to be
included in the Newsletter from Church Wardens in each Parish, especially where
volunteers go beyond the normal call of duty. Extra volunteers are needed in each of our
Churches for reading rotas, flower rotas, tea helpers and cleaning duty rotas. This
month we note with appreciation the work of Mr. Ian Prescott, Mr. Michael Lawal, Ms.
Marion Halpin and Mrs. Marina Gambold in the preparation of St. Iberius’ Church for the
Opera Festival this year. Marion and Marina give their Saturdays to the ongoing cleaning of
St. Iberius’ Church. Marina also cares for all the alter linen for St. Iberius’ Church.
CONFIRMATION 2020: (inc. meeting for parents and candidates, 28th November, 2019)
Confirmation Service will be held on Saturday 21st March, 2020 in St. Iberius’ Church at 3.30p.m. The Confirmation will be much earlier this year than in previous years. This is due to a number of factors not least the facilitation of so many Confirmations across the Diocese. A meeting of Confirmation candidates and parents will be held in The Rectory, Park on Thursday 28th November at 8.00p.m.
It was our pleasure to welcome Oliver Nabil Kahwati to the fold of the Christian Church on Sunday 27th October, 2019 in Killurin Parish Church. Oliver is the son David and Jennifer Kahwati, brother to little James and grandson of Mr. John and Mrs. Kathleen Watson, also parishioners of Killurin Church.
We extend our sincere sympathy to the family and friends of the late Tom Watson, England,
brother of John Watson, Killurin Parish. Deeply regretted by his loving family, friends and neighbours. “The day Thou gavest Lord, is ended”
We extend our sincere sympathy to the family and friends of the late Ms. Helen Copeland formerly of Bridgetown, Co. Wexford, who passed away peacefully earlier this year. Helen was daughter to Mrs. Sadie Copeland Webster of St. Iberius’ Church. We continue to remember Sadie and her family in our prayers. “Peace perfect peace”
We extend our sincere sympathy to the family and friends of the late George Lawlor. Beloved husband of Betty, father of Pauline, Sinead and George (Mayor of Wexford), brother of the late Kathleen, Nicky and Jimmy. Sadly missed by his loving wife, son, daughters, daughter-in-law Yvonne, grandchildren Christina, Sarah, Rachel and Ruth.
